Hatodik éve segítjük a szíriai térségben élő gyermekeket

On 12 December 2016, Ahmed gives a radiant smile as he finds out that the clothes he was given were exactly his size. Over 5,000 children recently displaced from eastern Aleppo city have received winter clothes provided by UNICEF. Displaced children like Ahmed are especially vulnerable at this time of year. As temperatures drop, children are at risk of hypothermia, pneumonia and other deadly diseases. With both parents dead and no other relatives to look after him or his four siblings, Ahmed came to the shelter from East Aleppo with neighbors. Winter is the latest threat to children in conflict-ridden Aleppo. As people continue to flee the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo, UNICEF is working to reach displaced families with the supplies they need to survive the brutal winter. Some children have lost or become separated from their families, leaving them even more vulnerable. Five days ago, 10-year-old Ahmed arrived in Jibreen, an industrial district on the outskirts of Aleppo. Ahmed’s parents were killed in the vicious conflict engulfing the city. He and his four siblings have nobody to take care of them and help keep them warm. The journey to Jibreen was gruelling for five-year-old Rahaf, her two-year-old brother Wael, and their mother, who fled their home in east Aleppo. Their mother, a widow who suffered a shrapnel wound on her leg, had to wheel her children for hours until they could be transported by bus to the Jibreen shelter.

On 9 December 2016, children at Jibreen shelter attend basic preparation classes in 20 classrooms rehabilitated by UNICEF and other education sector partners. The makeshift school now welcomes 900 displaced children, bringing some critical structure, fun and routine back to their lives. UNICEF trained 14 teachers on its Curriculum B programme, especially designed to help children who had been forced out of school to catch up with their peers and complete their basic education in half the required time. UNICEF also provided the children with new school bags and stationary. Some 31,5000 people are reported to have been displaced from and within eastern Aleppo City since 24 November. Temperatures are dropping quickly and heavy rainfall has made conditions even worse over the past few days. UNICEF is providing blankets and winter clothing, as well as access to safe water, essential medical care, including vaccinations and psychosocial support for children who have lived through such horrors. In Jibreen, to the east of Aleppo City, children and their families displaced by recent fighting in eastern Aleppo take shelter in a large warehouse in an area under Government control. Some 8,000 people are sheltering there. In Hanano, in east Aleppo City was the first district to be retaken by Government forces on 27 November. People are now moving back to the area as the frontline of fighting has moved further away. This includes families returning to their homes, as well as displaced families from other areas of east Aleppo.
